Getting Help FAQs

Ahimsa House, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the human and animal victims of domestic violence reach safety together. Ahimsa House works primarily with Georgia domestic violence shelters to provide shelter and care to the animal victims of violence while their families seek safety themselves.

How do I locate a domestic violence program or shelter?

In Georgia: 1-800-33-HAVEN.
Outside Georgia: 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or TTY for the Deaf: 1-800-787-3224
Help is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Se Habla Español.

Will you take my companion animal because I don’t want it, or if it becomes inconvenient for me to keep it?

No. We accept only animals caught up in an abusive situation (see following questions) and do not accept owner surrenders due to changes of lifestyle, moving, etc. Go to www.spotsociety.org for a list of local shelters and rescue groups.

I have found a stray animal, can I bring it to your shelter?

No, we do not have a physical shelter. We work with veterinarians, boarding facilities, and foster homes to care for the animal victims of domestic violence in our program. Go to www.spotsociety.org for a list of local shelters, rescue groups, and licensed wildlife rehabilitators.

Can I request temporary care for my companion animal myself?

Yes, but only if a domestic violence shelter representative, victims’ advocate, solicitor general, prosecutor, or law enforcement official confirms your need. If you feel you are in a situation where you need to get temporary care for your animal and/or yourself, you should contact any of the above listed persons who will help you (then get them to contact us). You can also request help if you have a TPO.

Is there a fee for your service?

There is no charge for Ahimsa House’s service, but donations are ALWAYS welcome and accepted!

What if I have difficulty getting my pet out of the house?

A law enforcement agency should be able to assist you in this matter. It may help if your pet is listed on a Temporary Protective Order (TPO), where a judge may order law enforcement to escort you to retrieve your pet. If you need assistance in listing your pet on a TPO, see our guidelines, or you or your representative may call (404)452-6248 for further information.

Do you accept only dogs and cats?

Ahimsa House will attempt to make arrangements for any type of animal, though we cannot guarantee availability.

How long can you keep my pet?

We will provide up to 60 days of assistance.

What forms do I have to sign?

You must complete Ahimsa House’s client packet, which will be presented and explained to you by an Ahimsa House representative.
