DIRECT SERVICES PROGRAM POLICIES & PROCEDURES

Services are available to any victim of domestic violence in Georgia.

Ahimsa House does not discriminate against any person on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, ethnicity, immigration status, age, gender identity/expression, marital status, sexual preference/orientation, pregnancy, medical condition, disability, veteran’s or military status, or any other protected characteristic under the law. Any client of the Ahimsa House has the right to raise concerns or make a complaint regarding discrimination under this policy without fear of retaliation. Any and all inquiries regarding the applications of this statement and related policies may be referred to:

  • Myra Rasnick
  • Executive Director, Ahimsa House
  • PO Box 2173
  • Tucker, GA 30085
  • 404-496-4038
  • director@ahimsahouse.org

The Direct Services Program is designed to provide emergency shelter for victims' animals only when no other housing option is available, and only for the duration of time that no other option is available. To request services, the victim or a representative can call the 24 hour crisis line at (404) 452-6248.

Ahimsa House is NOT an adoption program. You MUST intend to reclaim the animal(s).

In order to be eligible for services, Ahimsa House must receive a letter of support from a domestic violence program, law enforcement, or other victim-serving agency, or a copy of a current temporary protection order (TPO). Even though it is not required to be residing in a domestic violence shelter, it is recommended that a victim still contact a domestic violence program to learn about other available resources.

You may not use veterinary and/or housing services more than two times in a three-year period.

Ahimsa House reserves the right to determine any animal unfit to receive housing services either at the outset or after the animal has entered the program. Reasons for this determination include, but are not limited to, temperament and health issues.

Pets may ONLY be dropped off at a location previously approved by Ahimsa House.

Ahimsa House reserves the right to move any animal without prior notification.

You must speak with a representative of Ahimsa House at least 24 hours prior to dropping off or picking up pets at a designation facility except in emergency situations, in which case Ahimsa House will make a reasonable effort to assist on shorter notice.

Ahimsa House covers up to 60 days of animal housing and basic veterinary care. In certain situations this may be less. The type and exact amount of assistance provided will be determined by Ahimsa House at its sole discretion.

All veterinary and boarding charges must be pre-approved by Ahimsa House. Ahimsa House pays for basic boarding and ONLY the following veterinary services: Vaccinations (Rabies, DHLP-P, Bordetella, FVRCP), Feline Leukemia/FIV Test, Heartworm Test, and Wellness Exam.

Ahimsa House must speak with a veterinarian or boarding facility prior to rendering of any services.

It is Ahimsa House policy to spay or neuter domestic pets.

Ahimsa House reserves the right to select a veterinary/boarding facility and/or foster home of its choice. Animals may be housed in boarding facilities, foster homes, or a combination of both.

Even if you know your pet's location, ALL communication MUST go through an Ahimsa House representative.

You are required to apprise Ahimsa House of any changes in status (i.e. contact information, location of residence, etc.) within 24 hours of said change. Ahimsa House reserves the right to change the type and amount of assistance offered as a result of changes in status.

You can call Ahimsa House's administrative line at (404) 496-4038 any time between the hours of 9AM - 5PM to ask about your animal(s). If you have an emergency need, you may call our crisis line at (404) 452-6248 at any time.

You must reclaim your animal(s) within 24 hours of leaving a domestic violence shelter or other temporary accommodation.

You must intend to remain in the state of Georgia. If you are relocating to another state, please ask Ahimsa House for a referral in the state in which you are relocating. If you leave the state of Georgia without prior permission while our animal(s) is in Ahimsa House's Direct Services Program, your animal(s) is considered abandoned.

You will be notified by phone or email if you are nearing the limit of services.

Once the time limit has expired, animal(s) are deemed relinquished. After 10 days from the expiration, the animal(s) may be put up for adoption, surrendered to animal control, or euthanized.

Ahimsa House reserves the right to require the animal(s) be retrieved by you if problems should arise. In this case, you have no more than 24 hours to retrieve the animal(s). You will be notified by phone (this includes messages left). After the 24 hours expire, the animal(s) is considered relinquished (see above).

Ahimsa House reserves the right to terminate services at any time and for any reason. Effort will be made to provide reasonable notice to clients.

An Ahimsa House representative will contact you in the event that your animal(s) may require euthanasia. The reasons for euthanasia are severe injury or terminal illness.

If a veterinary inspection indicates that the animal has been abused or neglected, Ahimsa House reserves the right to press charges against the abuser(s) under the Georgia Animal Protection Act, O.C.G.A. 4-11-1.

For security reasons, if the animal(s) is placed in a boarding facility, the location of the facility may or may not be disclosed to you. If the animal is placed in foster care, the foster home's identity and location will not be disclosed to you and vice versa. We will not be able to provide visitation. ALL communication will occur via Ahimsa House staff, however, Ahimsa House can provide weekly updates on your animal(s) and can send photos upon request.

If you know the location of your animal(s) while in Ahimsa House's Direct Services Program, you CANNOT tell anyone except and advocate or representative their location. If you do share this information with anyone else, the services agreement becomes null and void and Ahimsa House will NOT be obligated to provide or pay for any services. You may be required to reclaim your animal(s) and/or assume financial responsibility for any services rendered, including prior services rendered.
